If the internet is to be believed (and increasingly: no), this Friday (7/25/25) marks the 25th anniversary of Don Hertzfeldt’s influential animated film, REJECTED. The 9-minute film bridges a brand of Gen X sneer and the absurdist humor which shaped the web (cringe!) for years.
If you’ve never seen it (Hi, Mom!) you can catch up here:
As a tribute to the film, I’ve put together a light-hearted electronic track using samples from the first scene:
REJECTED (Big Spoon Mix)
We underestimate how powerful absurdist humor can be, especially in these “for-the-love-of-God-and-all-that-is-holy-my-anus-is-bleeding!” times.
Remember! YOU may be the banana!
(Technical notes: I composed this track on the Digitone II, Digitakt II and Cyclone Bass Bot TT-303 MK2. The synth stabs, samples, and Bass Bot resonance/cutoff were played live into the recording.)
I am a banana. Banana is me.
I want to hear a track with "my anus is bleeding." Think we might have a hit on our hands there.
